Webb City begins 2018 season with 42-9 victory over Carl Junction

The Webb City Cardinals open the 2018 season with a 42-9 victory over the Carl Junction Bulldogs.

Entering the 2018 season, there were several question marks about this Webb City team. Could they replace the numerous graduated seniors on both sides of the ball? Could their defense be as good as it was in 2017 without Mike Smith at Defensive Coordinator?

The Cardinals answered those questions early with a stop on 4th and 3 to force a turnover on downs, and forcing three punts by Carl Junction. The defense also forced an interception and held the Bulldogs to 259 yards of total offense.

The Cardinals offense was led into the game by Senior Cade Beason who made the switch from linebacker, where he earned All-COC 2nd team honors in 2017, to Quarterback. Beason would struggle throwing the ball only completing 2 of 4 passes for 55 yards while also throwing two interceptions, including one that set up Carl Junction’s lone touchdown (Joe Kennedy to Alex Baker). Beason would answer the call on the ground though rushing for 104 yards on 10 carries with three rushing scores.

Webb City Senior running back, Durand Henderson, was held scoreless in the game, but still managed to lead the Cardinals in rushing yards with 105. Sophomore, Devrin Weathers also had a great start to his night scoring the game’s first touchdown while rushing for 57 yards on 13 carries.

Webb City will turn their attention to Joplin in Week 2. The Eagles went on the road to beat the Willard Tigers 41-18 in their first COC Large Division game. Carl Junction will be at home against Carthage who beat Nixa to open their season.
