Washburn Remembers Dwane Simmons

Early this morning the best day in Corey Ballentine’s life turned into the worst in just seconds. When out celebrating being selected in the 6th round of the NFL draft by the New York Giants, Ballentine along with his best friend and teammate, Dwane Simmons were involved in a shooting that took Simmons’ life.

As news broke that Dwane had passed away, many went to twitter to share their condolences for simmons and his family. All with the same sentiment towards the type of person he was. The voice of Washburn athletics, Jake Lebahn stating Dwane was an amazing teammate who battled back from two ACL injuries to keep playing, and was always there for his teammates. To head men’s basketball coach, Brett Ballard who’s team was on the receiving end of Dwane’s positive attitude as recently as Friday. Washburn head football coach, Craig Schurig knows dwane’s memory will live on through everyone he impacted.

“It spanned from first year freshmen, fifth year sneiors..” Schurig began, “Offense, defense didn’t matter. Dwane touched everybody with his love for life man. I mean he attacked things and brought a smile to your face everytime you saw him. But we’ll look at it as as, his spirit will be in us and he’s uhh, he’s an inspiration to the guys he’s met. And uhh, just a wonderful human being.”
