“Well were pumped up. We’ve worked all summer long,” said Pittsburg Senior, Dalton Gromer about the Purple Dragons opening week contest.

Friday, September 1st,  the Pittsburg Purple Dragons will kick off their 2017 season at home, and Purple Dragons’ head coach, Tom Nickelson, is ready to see what his team will look like.

“It’s time to go see what kind of team we are going to be,” said Nickelson, “we have a great opponent that’s going to show us where we need to improve, so we are really excited with the challenge.”

Pittsburg has 20 seniors on the roster this season, and that experience has already proved to be beneficial to the program.

‘It helps a lot that we have a lot of guys.” said Pittsburg Senior, Tye Cicero, “We have been around each other forever. We’ve just really taken leadership this year and led the program and just looking forward to see what we can do.”

Nickelson added, “this is their season, and when you have that many quality seniors that have team before themselves, it’s just kind of sets the tone for our whole offseason. So I’ve loved the leadership our seniors have displayed, and they’ve brought energy every single day in the weight room and the practice field.”

The first opponent for Pittsburgh will not be easy. They will face off with Missouri Class 4 State Champs, Harrisonville, but the Purple Dragons are excited to get the season going against a tough opponent.

“Well we’ve been looking forward to this game for awhile now, so we should be prepared for the game. We should be ready for Harrisonville this Friday,” said Pittsburg Senior Dalton Gromer.

Cicero added, “we’ve watched a little bit of film. They’re not huge, but they’re fast, they’re smart. We are just going to have to stay heavy on the mental reps and make sure we do our jobs.”

Nickelson also spoke on the level of competition saying, “we know the type of opponent we have week one: defending state champs, bring back a lot of quality players on both sides of the ball. So it’s been great motivation. If it’s provided a little bit of spark to make our kids go a little bit harder in the weight room , a little bit harder in sprints, than that’s what the purpose was. We want to start out with a challenging game, so we have that carrot at the end.”

The Purple Dragons and Wildcats square off Friday, September 1st from Pittsburg in the High School Game Night Game of the Week.
