Game of the Week: Webb City vs. Carl Junction

For the third straight year, two of the top powers in Missouri class four football clash to open the season.

“It’s good, you know in terms of the, just a big rivalry game, coming on out of the gate. You know it certainly gives you more of a sense of urgency this time of year, you know trying to get ready to play,” said Webb City Head Coach, John Roderique.

“Well, we’ve played our fair share of openers in recent history, that’s for sure, so you know, with it being week one, with it being Webb City, with all the attention that it draws that the kids would prepare well,” said Carl Junction Head Coach, Doug Buckmaster.

Carl Junction returns senior 1st-team all conference quarterback Joe Kennedy, who has proven to be one of the most explosive players in the area. For the Cardinals, it’ll be senior quarterback, Kade Beason’s first start under center, but not his introduction to the rivalry, as Beason earned 2nd team All-COC honors as a linebacker in 2017. A part of that Webb City defense that held Carl to their two lowest scoring totals last season.

“The atmosphere is there, you know. You go, you walk down, you get chills cause, everybody’s cheering in the stands.  I remember that last year, you know, and it’s nice to get back into that atmosphere,” said Webb City Senior Quarterback, Cade Beason.

As for the Bulldog’s, they’re faced with the challenge to slow down 1st-team all state running back, Durand Henderson, who totaled 430 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in both meetings vs Carl last year. A trend the CJ defense looks to end.

“We put our most motivated guys on defense, you know. We’re all mean we all like to hit, so, just, keep them out of the end zone,” said Carl Junction Senior Defensive End, Tyler Huffman.

Although it’s the kickoff to Missouri’s regular season, it’ll be a playoff atmosphere in Webb City.

“We’re just trying to get to that next level, cause, it’s different than any other game of the year,” added Huffman.

The Bulldogs and Cardinals will meet Friday (8/24) at Cardinal Stadium with kickoff coming at 7PM.
