Volunteer Income Tax Assistance wants to prepare your taxes for free.

VITA is an organization of volunteer tax preparers certified by the IRS and they offering free services to those who need it.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is offering free tax preparation services until April 15th. To qualify for the program you must be making under $60 thousand dollars a year and be filing a simple return. However keep in mind, there are a couple things you need to be sure to bring in with you.

“Any W-2’s, uh any 1099 R’s, which are retirement, um social security statements if they’re receiving social security, disability statements if they’re receiving disability,” says David Torres, VITA Tax Clinic in Joplin.

All volunteer tax preparers are certified and trained through the IRS. And their expertise has built trust between them and many of their clients.

“We get a lot of people that come back year after year after year,” says Daniel Stengel.

The program has been running for over 15 years and each year they can see anywhere between 3,000 to 3,500 tax returns. So, as you could imagine the program can be pretty busy.

“We are a first come first served basis. Our hours are 9am to 3pm Monday through Friday,” says David Torres.
