Update: Name released of Nesoho teacher struck, killed during crosswalk duty

The Neosho School District mourns the loss of one of their elementary school teachers. A press conference was held today about the ongoing investigation.

Benton Elementary School kindergarten teacher, Angel Hayes, 48, of Neosho died after being struck by a SUV vehicle during crosswalk duty. The incident happened Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. in Neosho.

Erwin Parker, 88, of Neosho was in the parent pick up line at the school when his foot became trapped between the acceleration and brake pedal, causing his vehicle to drive forward. Parker’s vehicle struck Hayes and then continued through the parking lot until crashing into another vehicle, which brought Parker’s vehicle to a stop.

Neosho Police responded, and are still investigating the incident. 

The Neosho School District is offering counseling to students and faculty at this time. Benton Elementary School will be out of school for the rest of the week. Hayes taught in Neosho for 19 years.
