MoDOT is starting work on a more than 30-mile section of I-44 from the Greene-Lawrence County line to the Sarcoxie exit.
Crews will install new guard rails at the end of some bridges. Workers will also extend interchange ramps at Route 174 east of Mount Vernon, Route 97 west in Mount Vernon, and Route U east of Sarcoxie. Then in a couple of weeks, crews will start night work to grind off the old asphalt and resurface this section of I-44. That work will happen from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
MoDOT says the bridge work will have the biggest impact, as work will happen around the clock. Crews will narrow traffic one lane at two different locations, two eastbound bridges and two westbound bridges over the next four to six weeks.
“We are going to have a single Lane and traffic barrier and there’s potential for traffic backups because of high congestion and going down to a single lane,” said Brad Gripka, MoDOT engineer. “We’re going to have message boards out there warning traffic, trying to give them warning of potential backups.”
