The next generation of community revitalization gets a head start at a Lamar home.
Students from the Lamar Career and Technical Center began building a home at 8th and Broadway at the beginning of the school year. Thursday, the students were working on masonry that will decorate the outside of the home. The students say the skills they are learning will be important, no matter what career they choose after high school, and their instructors say what they’re learning here will have an impact on whichever community they choose to call home.
“The skills they learn here will transfer to better all of their communities,” says carpentry instructor Casey Sheat. “We actually have nine area sending schools that send to our learning center, and they will all go back to their own home towns and be able to beautify every single one of them.”
The plan is for this year’s students to complete the outside, and next year’s group to finish the inside. After that, the school district will sell the home at auction.
