Storm damages RV park near Lucas Oil Speedway

News

The storm that rolled through Wheatland Monday night caused some serious damage and even caused some injuries.

This happened at an RV park near Lucas Oil Speedway.

According to Carolyn Ream from the Hickory County Office of Emergency Management, around 11 pm Monday. Several people were trapped inside an RV after it was blown over on its side. Multiple people were injured, some of them severely and were taken to a hospital. There was also damage several homes and business in Wheatland.

Danny Lorton works with the speedway, and was planning on hosting up to 10,000 people for an event this week.

“Other than structural damage to some buildings, the grandstands are gone up top from our dirt track speedway. Our camping area lost fencing, just a lot gone and we won’t be able to operate,” says Danny Lorton, Lucas Oil Speedway GM.

Storms knocked down power lines and trees across Highway 83, blocking the entire road into Wheatland. Drivers had to go through Hermitage to get to the city.

We’re still trying to confirm if this was caused by a tornado.
