Spring planting is underway for many home gardeners, but a local catalog farm has been working for months to get thousands of varieties ready for new homes.
It’s the Gilbert H. Wild and Son catalog farm near Sarcoxie.
They’ve got acres and acres of fields and then there are the plants themselves.
Tracy Beckman is the horticulturist there.
“There’s thousands, thousands.” And that’s just the daylilies. The Gilbert H. Wild and Son catalog farm has a long, long list of choices for your yard. “We got the peony fields, the daylily fields, the iris fields,” says Beckman.
Those fields aren’t quite ready to bloom – but many of the other choices are already sporting their colors. This year there are plenty of new options for adventurous gardeners. Beckman added, “In our spring catalot we had over 160 new varieties.”
From the familiar Creeping Phlox to the unusual Big Twister Rush Grass, it’s a busy time of year for Beckman, packing plants for home delivery.
“If you order now, depending on shipping delivered to you in this area, now to a couple of weeks,” add Beckman.
The top sellers are the daylilies, peonies and iris, which will bloom starting in a few weeks and through the summer depending on the variety.
Beckman said, “We got one in this spring called, it’s called space coast behavior pattern – it’s not just one color, it’s two color blends and the throats a different color – it’s amazing, it’s gorgeous.”
And with these choices, Beckman isn’t sure she she can pick a favorite. “I like to think of all of these plants as my babies.”
Gilbert H. Wild and Son has nearly 250 acres of plants. You can check them out through the company catalog and online by clicking here. https://www.gilberthwild.com/
