Social work seminar helps local students

The North Endzone facility on the campus of  MSSU served ast the site for the 16th annual Joplin Area Seminar For Professional Social Workers.

Tara Garrity is the Master Instructor for the MSSU Social Work Program, “A day to celebrate social workers and so we try to get all of our local social workers together, one of the things we also do is to fund two scholarships, one scholarship is for the MSW program at MIssouri State University and the other one is for here at MSSU for our BSW students”

When the event started, Springfield was the closest location in Missouri sstudents could go to get a degree in the occupation, but that changed a few years ago when MSSU started it’s own program and to say it’s growing quickly, Tara Garrity says is a bit of an understatement.

“A the program started four years ago, initially we had 11 uh people in the program, this year is our 4th year and we are up to almost 70 students”

“When the Social Work Program here at Missouri Southern, there were only 11 internship opportunities, this coming year, there will be nearly 40 of them”
Senior Victori Wright is the recipient of this year’s MSSU scholarship and is doing an internship at the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home in Joplin.

“Super important, I feel like I’ve learned more in my internship some days than you know just reading a book and it really applies it to what we’ve learned and it kind of connects the theories with what we’re going to be doing in the field so very important.” Wright says.
