Route 66 brings millions of tourism dollars to Joplin

A tour group out of the Czech Republic are riding motorcycles along the Mother Road. They stopped at Joplin’s City Hall for a bit of history. For one of the travelers, his love of Route 66 means this isn’t the first or last trip through Southwest Missouri.

“We do it since 2008 every year, twice a year in May and September, different groups,” says one Czech traveler.

A 2017 breakdown of Visa transactions shows there were 14,000 visitors from Canada alone in 2017. The top five rounds out with tourists from Mexico, the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany. The impact of international tourism is even bigger for the state with $286 million spent that same year.
