A Poplar Bluff man has been charged with attempted child kidnapping after trying to lure an underaged female into his car last November.

Authorities say Gilbert L. Burkhart was in Rolla on November 6, 2018, helping to deliver reading material.

During this time, a call was received concerning a suspicious individual attempting to lure an 8-year-old female juvenile into his car. Officers from the Rolla Police Department responded, but were unable to locate the suspicious male. An area canvass was conducted, and pertinent information related to this case was obtained.

On January 23, 2019, Detectives received additional information which led to the identification of Burkhart, who is currently on the Missouri Sex Offender Registry.

Burkhart is currently incarcerated in the Butler County Jail on unrelated charges. His bond for the attempted child kidnapping charge was set at $250,000.
