The Neosho National Fish Hatchery spends part of the day thanking those that served our country.
Today was the 8th annual “Rainbows for Veterans” fishing derby. Veterans were able to catch and keep up to four rainbow trout this morning for free. Volunteers and staff provided the rods, bait, lunch, and even had a spot where the fish could be cleaned after they were caught.Last year, weather did have an impact on how many came out to fish, but with today’s sunshine — about one hundred and sixty six veterans were in attendance.
“Last year it was really cold. There really wasn’t that many people and there’s a lot more people here this year because of the weather.” says volunteer Bryan Lewis
“Just giving them a few hours to relax, take a load off, kind of decompress a little bit. And that seems like what were getting here. Lot of people are having a lot of good time.” says Neosho National Fish Hachery’s Project Leader Roderick May
The veteran’s fishing derby is a kickoff to the hatchery’s derby season. The kid’s fishing derby will be on the first Friday in June.
