A new harpsichord was used in its first full concert performance this evening at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. Pittsburg State University hasn’t bought a new harpsichord in about 50 years.
It was handmade by Vancouver, British Columbia builder Craig Tomlinson, and took 12-hundred hours to construct. Getting it ready for show time was no easy task, either.
“The harpsichord was delivered to us in June and it has to become accustomed to the humidity and temperature of the building, so Dr. Marchant in the Music Department has been tuning it and slowly adjusting it for the last few months to make sure it was perfect,” explained center Director Joe Firman.
The harpsichord was purchased for roughly $50,000 using donations from the PSU Steinway Society.
