The price to rent Memorial Hall in Carthage may be going up.
Council members have given first round approval to increase rental rates by $25 dollars. City workers say the facility is used on a regular basis – but that costs like staffing and maintenance are outpacing rental rates set back in 2008.
“Kind of like other recreational programs; it doesn’t make money. It just, it doesn’t even make enough to maintain its own services. It’s basically operating at a deficit,” says Tom Short, Carthage City Administrator.
If the $25 dollar increase is finalized, municipal workers say the hall would still rely on city funding to keep up. The city council is expected to discuss the change again next month.
