If your phone sounded an alarm that you didn’t set at 1:18 this afternoon, you’re not alone.
It was a countrywide test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System – called a presidential alert at the top of the message. The alarm is similar to the Emergency Alert System, or E.A.S., that’s been testing on television stations for years.
The W.E.A. System will be used as a warning for dangerous weather, missing children, and other critical situations. Earlier tests estimated about 75 percent of cell phones would activate for the W.E.A. Test.
