Some history buffs are asking a local sheriff for help preserving a school site from the 1800s.
Members of the Eastern Jasper County Historic Sites Association are worried about the old Cave Springs school. Some visitors have been using metal detectors to locate historic artifacts which they then take. They point out that removing historic items from the county owned property is not allowed.
“It’s a good rule of thumb is to just check with the property owner. If it’s county owned property you might check with the county to make sure that metal detecting is ok,” says Jasper Co. Sheriff Randee Kaiser.
They add that in some cases, the visitors are digging holes to locate items but fail to fill it in when they’re done, which creates a tripping hazard.
