Southeast Kansas law enforcement agencies take additional precautions to prepare for the thousands of people coming to the area this weekend.
Officials with the Pittsburg Police Department are increasing security measures for the 2018 Little Balkins Days Festival. The festival brings thousands of people to Pittsburg every Labor Day weekend for dozens of events of all varieties.
New this year is the addition of bike cops, which have an easier time navigating crowds than patrol cars. They’re also monitoring the influx of traffic and looking out for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“Make sure that they have a sober driver and really enjoy this time because you know it’s a time of celebration so the biggest thing is to make sure when you’re celebrating you’re doing it smart,” says Quentin Turner.
The department is used to handling events of this size as the city continues to grow and see more visitors.
