Residents from around the region come to play a sport that’s rapidly growing in popularity.
The Joplin Family YMCA held their first pickle ball tournament this weekend. Saturday they had the men’s and women’s doubles bracket, with today being their mixed doubles bracket. When the pickle ball group first started there was only a handful of players, but 42 people came out to compete for plaques and medals this weekend. Pickle ball is similar to many other sports, which is why organizers believe it’s gaining interest from dedicated players around the area.
“A lot of it comes from people that’s played tennis, badminton, ping pong. Those are the sports that really have common with pickle ball.” says Pickle Ball Coordinator John Hirshey
Hirshey also says they hope to add a spring and fall tournament for next year. They’ll add brackets based on age group due to the mix of both young and old players interested.
