NEW ORLEANS – Laissez les bon temps rouler (let the good times roll)!

It’s Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday!

It’s a big celebration not only in the heart of Cajun country but many of us love the traditions of the holiday.

We’re looking in on two of the biggest parties, in New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama. 

It’s the last day to celebrate carnival and the Mardi Gras spirit.

Mardi Gras is also known as “Shrove Tuesday.” Fat Tuesday is one final day to party before the seriousness and repentance of Ash Wednesday.

A version of Mardi Gras has been practiced around the world for centuries.

People wanted to cook meat and other foods they would be giving up for Lent.

In the US, New Orleans is the place to be on Fat Tuesday, even though Mobile, Alabama was actually home to the first Mardi Gras celebration to take place on American soil, in 1703.

Fat Tuesday has been an official holiday in Louisiana since the 1800’s.

Alabama hosts the second-largest celebration.
