Nevada-Vernon County Chamber kicks off new holiday tradition

A Southwest Missouri Chamber of Commerce is kicking off a new holiday tradition.

The Nevada-Vernon County Chamber is asking for essay and art submissions celebrating any holiday –not just Christmas — from kids in the first through twelfth grades. The contest is open to any school-aged child in Vernon County, including home school kids.

While there is no minimum word count for the essay portion, the maximum is 300 words. All submissions need to be in by Friday, December 14th at 3 pm.

Winners will be announced December 20th, and there will be a cash prize for first place winners. Organizers say with declining participation in the former tradition of the Miss Merry Christmas Pageant, they wanted something everyone could participate in.

“And when we started thinking of the holidays, we started thinking, “what about an all-inclusive, absolutely 100% inclusive, boy and girl, anybody that wants to enter can enter, as long as they’re in school here in Vernon county,’” says Sheree Gayman, Executive Director, Nevada-Vernon County Chamber of Commerce.
