NEO women’s basketball team serves the community for Dr. Martin Luther King Day

The NEO women’s basketball team set out to serve the community today.

The ladies joined forces with the LEAD Agency that is based out of Miami. The team was able to learn a little something about their community as well as volunteer some of their time too.

Today marks the celebration Dr. Martin Luther King Day, a holiday observed to honor the determination of the civil rights activist. The NEO women’s basketball team participated in the holiday by collaborating with the LEAD Agency in an effort to engage with their community.

“I think that they were able to come together as one and that this day means it’s bigger than them. And so, I think they learned a lot today,” says Shillalie Jones, Asst. Women’s Basketball Coach.

The LEAD Agency helps educate the public on environmental concerns in the area and encourages them to get involved. Today the women’s basketball team helped the organization sharpen their gardening tools, made bird feeders and made a sign to commemorate Dr. King. And the team’s coach is saying she is proud to see her team working together even off the court.

“We have girls from Belgium, Czech and the United States as well. And this just shows we can all come together and just be a part of something outside of the basketball court,” says Shillalie Jones.

And team member Jo-Nah johnson says she thinks the event has drawn her team closer. Saying with her team being as diverse as it is, at least she knows they can all come together to show the community what their really about.

“Today one of the quotes we had was you cannot stand alone, so and together we’re stronger. So I really like that, that’s what I’m gonna take on everyday because on the court you’re not alone, in life you’re not alone, when you got somebody with you together you’re stronger,” says Jo-Nah Johnson.

And this was one of the many community service opportunities available to students today. NEO had students volunteer at the Community Crisis Center and the Miami Seniors Center as well.
