Mt. Vernon city leaders look for help building a new skate park

News

Mt. Vernon City Administrator Max Springer says the city is hoping to build a skate park in Gibbs Park. He says the roughly $150,000 project would be built in two phases, each costing $75,000.

Springer says the Community Betterment Council is currently accepting donations to build the park, and there is also the possibility of a larger fundraiser in the future. He says there’s already a population of skateboarders in Mt. Vernon, and the city wants to make sure they have a safe place to go.

“If they’re on the street, they have to contend with cars,” Springer explained. “We’ve had people complain about them shooting out across the street, jumping across something and then they land out in the street, so the idea is to protect the kids, and yet give them a place to go.”

If you’d like to donate, you can contact Mt. Vernon City Hall at (417) 466-2122 or the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce at (417) 466-7654.
