MSSU Recognized for Innovative Budget Idea

Joplin, MO- One of the best selling books about running a successful business is called “The Great Game of Business.”  It was written by Springfield business owner Jack Stack.

School leaders at Missouri Southern decided to apply the same open budget management style to education. The result was the “Great Game of Education,” which has been honored with the 2017 Pioneer Award.

MSSU President, Dr. Alan Marble says the program lets everyone on campus including administrators, faculty, staff and even students see the budget and come up with ways to improve the bottom line.

Marble says, “Common sense for us because we’re an open book institution as a public institution but to use it to help manage things to let people know more about their operation and  the revenue that they’re driving and the expenses that they’re sending out the door. People do a very good job of managing u their own affairs when you give them the tools.”

Marble says the program has allowed the university to weather budget cuts better the last few years since it has been in operation.
