More construction due on Columbia Elementary safe room

News

A safe room at a Joplin grade school will be getting some extra attention from construction crews.

The Joplin school board will consider a contract to work on the building at Columbia Elementary. It calls for ten stabilizers on the southeast corner of the shelter, a project that attracted one company with a base bid of $139 thousand dollars. School workers add the structure is still safe for most activities.

“We currently are safe for use for programs, for PE classes,” says Dave Pettit.

The construction will ensure the safe room also meets FEMA standards. A second round of repairs is expected in a few months after they know the new stabilizers are doing their job.
