You’re probably familiar with the term “bucket list.” But with so many golf courses across the Show-Me State, which ones should avid golfers put on their to list to play? One man is helping them make that decision, and he made a stop in Joplin today.
Mark Schupp, a retired businessman from St. Louis, is in the process of playing every one of the nearly 400 public and private golf courses in Missouri. Today he played at Twin Hills, Briarbrook and Schifferdecker.
“The course I played yesterday was 303 so Schifferdecker today is 304,” says Schupp.
He says it’s as much fun for him to get to the different courses as it is to play them.
“Oh I love traveling around the state, I have a pickup truck that I got a couple of years ago primarily for this and I drive down the roads in the morning put the windows down and put on rock and roll and I’m seeing Missouri as it should be seen,” says Schupp.
He plays the courses, sometimes several in a days time, and the writes about them by night. He also includes pictures of the courses and historical information about famous golfers who played there.
3 time US open champ Hale Irwin, from Baxter Springs, played on this course in his youth but isn’t the only famous golfer to walk these fairways.
Inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame, and known as the Joplin Ghost, Horton Smith won two of the first three Master’s tournaments. To his knowledge, Schupp says his website is the only one online devoted strictly to missouri courses and country clubs.
“I provide all the information about the golf course, all the quantitative data you want to know, the length, the type of grasses there are, the slope, the rating, etc. Take a lot of pictures so a perspective golfer from either out of town or in Joplin that played or just started playing, hasn’t played all the courses can look around and see what course matches up with their, their needs,” says Schupp.
