Joplin fire fighters receive $12 hundred dollars as a part of a grant that will help with the needs of the department.
The Missouri American Water Firefighter Grant provides opportunities to departments within the company’s service territories. This is the fourth year that Joplin’s department has been selected to receive the honor.
In previous years, the money has gone towards fire prevention, but this year the chief wants reflective safety vests for all the men and women within the department.
“So, everytime we can try to apply for grants and things like that we do, because that lessens the burden of the taxpayers. So, yeah anytime we can get money like this it goes a long way,” says Jim Furgerson, Joplin Fire Chief.
“Being the water provider, fire protection is something that is critically important to the health of our communities. So, being able to have the funds to support what the fire departments in our communities do on a daily basis is really- it’s very rewarding,” says Christie Barnhart, Missouri American Water.
In 2017, Missouri American Water awarded $36 thousand dollars to firefighting agencies across the state through this program.
