Miami event aims to help residents be more active

Skills are put to the test as Miami’s first community-wide fitness challenge is held.

The event is a corporate challenge that nine businesses in Ottawa County participated in.

The contest began with a test measuring participants’ weight loss between January 2 and April 6.

A series of points were given based on the team’s average.

Saturday was the final day for points to be earned, with a variety of fitness competitions including an obstacle course, basketball, and volleyball.

Josh Brinkley, community wide fitness challenge organizer says, “When I moved to Miami, one of the big things I noticed is on citydata.com, Miami was ranked one of the least likely cities to work out in America. Number one. We decided we needed to do something to foster fitness and wellness in the community on a larger scale so we decided this was a fun way to do it.”

Royalty Speech Therapy, in partnership with Shyers Construction Company, received the most points from the challenges.

They received 50% of business entry fees and were also given a trophy to keep in their business for the rest of the year.
