The Springfield Fire Department is coming with their Bomb Squad to “make safe an apparent home made incendiary device” – Joplin Police Department

(64801) — The male subject has been detained. Capt Trevor Duncan of the Joplin Police Department tell us, “He has been taken for a mental evaluation. Officers confirmed he did fire shots within the house.”

After he is evaluated it will be determined if he is competent and was actually threatening police and/or individuals. If he was competent then he could face criminal charges.

This evening at 6:05PM it was reported to Joplin News First ‘shots fired’ at 830 S Jefferson and what was thought to be a male suicidal subject.  We followed the situation and within an hour the tone had changed from suicidal to homicidal.

He was threatening police we were told.  And possibly threatening others within the home.  But it wasn’t known if anyone else was inside the house.  So SWAT was summoned.  The MRAP armored vehicle arrived for officers protection and negotiations began.

He eventually came out of the residence without incident and had threatened the home was booby trapped and there was a bomb inside.  So JPD sent in their remote controlled robot.

As the robot was making it’s way through the home at 9:20PM it was determined that there was a home made incendiary device. So as a precaution the Springfield bomb squad came to diffuse the home made device.

We will have more information as it becomes available from the JPD regarding this situation.
