1/2 mile east of Duquesne Road on Route 66/east 7th, Joplin News First was there at 1:15 AM Saturday morning. Just as a second round of ambulances arrived to transport a reported 4 people injured in a head-on crash involving two pick up trucks.
Jasper Co Sheriff’s Deputies had spotlights shining along Summit Drive south and onto Tammy Lane, searching for an adult male passenger that had left on foot from the crash. Possibly injured, head trauma, and wearing a camouflage coat. Temperatures were dangerously cold as they had plummeted nearly 40 degrees to 20 degrees with a 20 mph wind.
The crash occurred as one truck traveling westbound operated by Anthony Riner, 18, of Carthage crossed the center line and struck another truck head-on. Chelsea Waggoner, 23, of Joplin was traveling eastbound. The man missing from the crash had been a passenger in the Waggoner vehicle.
I spotted the missing man in the distance in my news car headlights on Summit Lane. EMS was still on the scene but very far away on east 7th Street. I got him at least to my news car so then I could run down to the road to get some help. He was hurt and disoriented. He kept asking where he was and what had happened. The man suffered serious injuries according to the MSHP official report. Anyone else would have done the same thing in my situation. It happened to be right place right time. I was glad to help. – Shannon Becker
