When Tommy Bilson uncovered a top prize on a Missouri Lottery “Daily Crossword” Scratchers ticket, he told himself, “I don’t think that’s going to be true.” After a quick scan to be sure, the Lamar resident realized he had indeed won a $50,000 prize.
“I buy one every once in a great while,” shared Bilson, who purchased the winning ticket on Nov. 16.
“It kind of stunk because it was on a Friday,” he teased. “I had to sit on a $50,000 piece of cardboard for three days. I am still in disbelief.”
At the time he claimed, Bilson had not told anyone he had won and said he doesn’t have any immediate plans for the prize money just yet.
“I’m not a real believer until I can check my bank account,” he laughed.
He purchased his winning ticket at Shell Food Mart, 3308 E. 32nd St., in Joplin.
“Daily Crossword” is a $3 ticket that began on Aug. 27. It offers more than $6.8 million in remaining prizes, including five more top prizes of $50,000.
In the most recent fiscal year, players in Newton County, where the winning ticket was sold, won more than $5.5 million in Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers received more than $589,000 in commissions and bonuses, and an additional $2.3 million went to education programs in the county.
