The Kansas Department of Labor reports the state unemployment rate moved up to 3.5% last month.
This number is an increase coming out of February and in comparison to March of 2018, where the rate was 3.4%.
Looking at south east Kansas, Cawford county sits at 4.2%, one of the lower rates in the area.
City leaders in Pittsburg say with the amount of business moving there, they have seen one of their highest rates of employment in a while.
Blake Benson, the executive director of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce says, “The last half of 2018, the unemloyment numbers were the lowest it’d been for pittsburg and crawford county since the late 1990’s. So overall, our economy is still extremely healthy, unemployment is relatively low.”
Last year about 40 business set up shop in Pittsburg.
Also expansions from local business like Miller’s Professional Imaging and Kendall Packaging have helped add more jobs to the area as well.
