Kansas community college organization aims to raise awareness for veteran suicide

News

Labette Community College is raising awareness of the high statistics of veteran suicide in the United States.

The Student Veteran Organization hosted “1 Day, 22 Souls.”

The organization says on average, 22 veterans commit suicide a day.

This event is to bring awareness to the issue and raise money for student veterans on campus.

One student veteran says she is proud to be able to help her fellow servicemen who are an inspiration for her to be a resource in the community.

Andrea Geiger, Labette Community College student veteran, says, “I want to do this for them and for the ones that are coming back that kind of get lost and have seen things that civilians just have no idea about and they just need some help.”

A live wood carving was done to represent the battle cross and honor fallen service members.

And some of the military walked around Forest Park with a weighted backpack for 22 laps to show support for veterans.
