JPD recommends local businesses to check for counterfeits due to rise in reports

The Joplin Police Department notices counterfeit money appearing around the area.

So far five cases of counterfeit money were filed within Jasper and Newton Counties yesterday. Local businesses have seen counterfeit bills consisting of ten to one hundred dollars.

But most establishments have been able to catch the fake money. The Joplin Police Department recommends businesses to have a counterfeit detection marker, as well as, using instinct to inspect bills.

“You know the general appearance and feel and then the security characteristics that all money has. You know watermarks, strips, and different things like that. Just an extra second or two can really mean the difference between determining that you shouldn’t take the bill or you’re suspicious of the bill or that the bill’s okay and you’re okay to take it,” says Captain Trevor Duncan with the Joplin Police Department.
