Each year there is a large influx of new employees in large school districts like Joplin, many of them teachers.
To help get them acclimated to the community, and what it has to offer, the school district holds an annual event, the Health Benefits and Retail Therapy Fair. Dorothy Alsenz, development specialist with the Joplin School District, says it’s become so big that they’ve opened up the event for all community members.
“This is the third year for the event and it’s grown every year, we started the first year with 50 vendors and we had second year 80 and this year 120 vendor booths,” says Dorothy Alsenz.
Some of the vendors included area doctor’s offices, dentists, health screenings, boutiques and a host of other retailers. She says the event is also a fundraiser for the school district employee wellness fund which helps pay for, among other things, flu shots.
