Will Rogers Turnpike crash, west of Miami, Okla. investigation and clean-up closes I-44, 7 hours

I-44 west closed from 8:09 p.m. to 3:09 a.m.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. — Wednesday evening Oklahoma Highway Patrol report that a crash in the westbound lanes of I-44 halted traffic around 8:00 p.m.

After being closed about seven hours for clean up and crash investigation the westbound lanes reopened Thursday morning 3:09 a.m.

The Will Rogers Turnpike Mile-Marker 307 westbound is blocked due to an accident in the area.”


The crash involved two tractor trailers and a passenger vehicle. One driver was transported to a Miami, Okla. hospital and then flown by helicopter to Springfield, Mo. for a higher level of care. Extent of injuries are unknown.

Injuries suffered to others involved are not known at this time. Sources tell us there are fatalities.

Traffic was turned around on the interstate that was stopped by the crash and directed the opposite way on the interstate back to the Miami, Okla. exit.

Additionally there was a report of a highway worker’s eye being injured about 11:00 p.m. during clean up. He was transported non-emergency to a Vinita, Okla. hospital.
