CHEROKEE COUNTY, KS (166/Hwy 400) — Shortly after 7:00 AM a Riverton School Bus was rear-ended just west of the four-way stop at K-26, SE Bagdad Road.  The crash occurred on 166/400 (see map).

Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves tells Joplin News First from the crash scene exclusively, “This morning just after 7:00 AM a school bus was stopped here on Hwy 166. East of Baxter and just West of the K-26 Junction picking up a student.  And as that student was boarding the bus, a westbound passenger car struck the rear of the bus.

Sheriff Groves goes on to tell us there were thirteen kids on that Riverton bus. And two people were transported to Joplin hospitals.  One was a student and the other was the driver of that passenger car.

One of the children who was on the bus was transported to the hospital, not necessarily for injuries but believed to be in shock.  The other kids were reported to be ok and were taken on to school.”

The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported via ambulance to Joplin with non life-threatening injuries.
