Public school bus rear ended by semi-tractor trailer, students go off-roading down embankment

Joplin News First

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tell Joplin News First live in our initial broadcast that this Stockton R-1 public school bus was carrying 13 students and staff of the Stockton, MO softball team.

The MSHP trooper tells us, the bus was traveling west on MO-96 attempting to make a left turn onto Easterly Lane in Carthage MO at Kellogg Lake.  A semi-tractor trailer traveling the same direction failed to stop and rear ended that school bus.  The collision shoved the bus down a steep embankment.  You can see the path it took in our Joplin News First live video and images.

The bus driver kept the bus from turning over.  Missouri State Highway Patrol mentioned how remarkable it was that no one was seriously injured and the driver kept that bus upright.

Four on the bus are seeking medical attention.

The driver of the bus and the driver of the semi-tractor trailer were not injured in the crash and remained on the scene the entire time of our broadcast.

“A bumpy ride for those students for sure.  And that bus driver?  WOW.  She must be experienced in some kind of 4-wheelin or off-roadin! I don’t know what y’all is doing in Stockton but it’s workin!” – Shannon Becker, @joplinnewsfirst on instagram

We will update when more information is available from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
