Multiple crashes in quick downpour of rain close I-44 west at Joplin; 15 vehicles involved

JOPLIN, Mo. — Shortly after 4:00 p.m. Thursday multiple crashes closed down I-44 west at Joplin. Newton County Ambulance, METS ambulance and Quapaw Nation transported and unknown amount of injured to area hospitals.

15 vehicles were involved in the series of crashes within the mile section of road between 6.2 and 5.4 mile marker westbound I-44.

Crashes occurred in a sudden downpour of rain. Chase Bullman, Meteorologist at KSN-16 shows us radar at the time of the crash:

CRASH SCENE #1 5.4 MM, WEST SIDE CRASH SCENE – JOPLIN POLICE DEPT

This crash was the first in the series of crashes. As the rain falls on the hot road surface, the oils rise to the surface and with the rain make the road immediately slick. The first crash would have been the tractor-trailer at 5.4 that struck a rock wall, blocking all continuing traffic.

One person involved in the crash told us she got out of her vehicle and it was struck by another one in a crash almost immediately afterwards.

CRASH SCENE #2 6.2 MM, EAST SIDE CRASH SCENE – MSHP

This crash scene was the second in the series and was started as one vehicle, tractor trailer was stopped in traffic for a crash ahead. Then numerous other passenger vehicles struck it from behind.

According to Cpl G.H. Hendrix of Troop D there was one person suffering serious injury. Samantha Raney, 29, of Baxter Springs, Kansas. She was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu.

“CRASH OCCURRED AS ALL VEHICLES WERE WESTBOUND IN THE PASSING LANE. VEHICLE 4 WAS STOPPED FOR AN EARLIER CRASH, VEHICLE 3 AND VEHICLE 2 WERE SLOWING. VEHICLE 1 STARTED TO SLIDE ON THE WET ROADWAY AND STRUCK VEHICLE 2 IN THE REAR. VEHICLE 2 THEN STRUCK VEHICLE 3 IN THE REAR. VEHICLE 3 STRUCK THE TOWED UNIT OF VEHICLE 4.” Cpl Hendrix of Missouri State Highway Patrol

The roadway was cleared to slow-moving traffic around 6:35 p.m.
