I-44 west pileup at Joplin, slows down Monday drive home, JPD update on ‘highway speed crash’

Joplin News First

6:37 PM Monday evening reports of a multi-vehicle crash on I-44 at Exit 6. This crash was in the shadow of Mercy Hospital, partially on the overpass of South Main Street and I-44 in the westbound lanes causing complete lane blockage for nearly two hours.

According to first-responders this was labeled a ‘highway speed’ crash. So large-scale emergency response was readied.

This stretch of I-44 from Main Street to Rangeline is in the Joplin city limits so the crash scene was handled by Joplin Police Department, even though it is in Newton County.

According to first-responders this was labeled a ‘highway speed’ crash

“There were five vehicles involved including a tractor-trailer,” Sgt William Davis of the Joplin Police Department tells Joplin News First. “Two were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

Sgt Davis went on to say, “it could have been much worse.”

Traffic was diverted off of I-44 so it was not at a standstill. For the first hour traffic was sent to the south on MO-86. Then for the remainder MODOT Emergency Response arrived and dismantled the exit 6 westbound ramp barricade so traffic was diverted off of I-44 then immediately back onto I-44.
