Golden City tornado claims three lives, NWS says winds were 140+ mph in this EF3 tornado

Joplin News First was first to report LIVE! just an hour after the tornado had powered across MO-126 claiming three lives.  Shannon Becker reported from the ‘search and rescue’ where the three died near 80th Lane.  

The National Weather Service preliminary survey results say it was an EF-3 tornado with winds in excess of 140 mph

Mobile homes damaged and destroyed….numerous home with roof damage and several with damage to outside walls. In addition…several power poles were snapped and numerous trees had trunks snapped. Tornado was on the ground for 22 minutes. National Weather Service at Springfield 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirms 86-year-old Kenneth Harris and 83-year-old Opal Harris died in the storm that hit SE 80th Lane and MO-126. The couple was found 200 yards from their residence.

Meanwhile, a 56-year-old Betty Berg died and her 56-year-old husband, Mark Berg, sustained serious injuries in the storm.

The Berg couple were found at the scene of their manufactured home just west of Golden City in the same area.

A fertilizer plant sustained damage near 100 lane and 60 road.  A roof blew off a grain bin and, due to chemicals that could have possibly been released, a 1-mile radius around the plant was evacuated for precaution.

Authorities confirm no other structures were impacted in the city limits.
