A school district has received a grant for a new playground surface.
The Joplin Area Catholic Schools received a more than $27 thousand dollar grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to build a duromat playground safety base in the Early Childhood Playground at Saint Mary’s Catholic School. This new surface, made from old tires, will be replacing the wood chips that are currently at the playground.
“Wood chips are a great natural material to have on the ground to soften falls, but it’s not the best. The kids can fall and get scrapped, cut, can get splinters, but the rubber mat will help,” says Joanne Lown, Principal, Saint Mary’s Catholic School.
Along with the new flooring for the play area, new equipment and an expansion of the fence around the playground is coming as well. The remodel will begin next month.
