Freeman Medical Focus: Physicals

News

“We look at any underlying conditions that an athlete might have, and try to make them as safe as we can on the field, or on the court before they get on the court,” explained Bill King with Freeman Sports Medicine. “It’s mandated by every high school activities association for every state that a student must have if they’re going to participate in an extracurricular activity, that they have to have a pre-participation sports physical.”

Athletic trainers say they’re seeing a rise in some injuries with athletes who focus on just one sport at a younger age, sometimes playing year round.

“We may have students who have some high blood pressure and athletes that their shoulder may have been hurting for a while, but they don’t know why,” King added. “So, we’ll take a look at that and find out what might be causing their shoulder injury and knee injuries, ligament, and we also look for underlying heart conditions.”

Over the next six weeks, Freeman Sports Medicine will check for all those and more.

“We’re just we’re tying to make the kids as safe as possible on the field,” said King.

The physicals start at the Freeman Rehabilitation and Sports Center next Wednesday April 5th for athletes at East Newton, Seneca, Diamond and Sarcoxie.
