Educating the public on the potentially deadly illness was the purpose for the Eighth Annual Freeman Diabetes Expo. While there is no cure for the disease yet, people can learn to manage and live with it. Several groups and organizations displayed some of the latest insulin pumps and glucose monitoring systems.
Susan Pittman, the Freeman Diabetes Program Coordinator, says anyone can get the disease and encourages people of all ages to get tested for it.
“Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney disease and it’s also associated with cardiac disease. It’s also a leading cause of amputations and blindness,” said Pittman.
The event also featured cooking demonstrations of meals with healthy ingredients.
