Evening event at local shelter helps kids practice reading to a furry friend

News

Kids spend their evening reading a favorite story to a furry friend.

The Joplin Humane Society hosted a special event called Kiss the Puppies Goodnight for kids in the Shelter Pals Reading Program. Thursday night, kids read a book to a cat or dog, not only to help children with their reading, but also socialize with the animals. With excitement on the children’s faces at the event, humane society staff are happy to have started this program.

“Anytime that we can help out our community like they help us out. And kids education is super important to a lot of us. And they really, really love coming out and reading to them to,” says Tasha May, Volunteer Coordinator.

The next Shelter Pals event will be a pet camp that begins at the end of June.
