Investigators in Newton County say the discovery of more than $1,000 of counterfeit cash should send a strong message to the community.
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call Friday night that several fake $100 bills were found in a ditch. They say the fake cash all had the same serial number, along with other inconsistencies. Investigators say while this cash didn’t make it into circulation, it should serve as a warning to residents and business owners.
“The businesses need to check, and also if an individual is selling something to somebody they need to check and make sure those bills are actually U.S. currency and not fake,” says Lt. Andy Pike, Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is contacting the Secret Service, who investigate counterfeit money cases.
