The Jasper County Commission voted Tuesday morning to place a sales tax extension on the April ballot. The move would extend a 1/4th cent sales tax for 15 years for an expansion project at the Jasper County Jail, a new courts building in Joplin and to add an additional courtroom to the Jasper County Courthouse in Carthage, which would also see security upgrades.  Voters initially approved the sales tax in 2016 to pay for structural changes to the historic Carthage courthouse and to build a new county juvenile center.
