The Commerce Police Department is working to help Oklahomans affected by the government shutdown.
The department teamed up with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to give back to those in need. They are accepting food pantry items, preferably non perishable items to be dropped off at the department.
It will go directly to Ottawa county residents. Officials say giving back like this is a part of their duty.
“That way they know that were not always the bad guys and that we are here to help and to serve and it’s just our way to do that to show them that’s what we’re here for,” says Ray Horn, Commerce Police Chief.
Horn adds the Quapaw and Miami Police Departments are participating in the food drive as well. Their drop off locations are at their police department buildings.
