An area elementary school is an award winner.
Students, teachers and parents of Columbia Elementary School in Joplin had the highest rate of participation in last weekend’s 5k run on the runway challenge at the Joplin Regional Airport. As a result, they received a trophy today from a member of the Freedom of Flight organization.
“They needed to field the largest team of any school and Columbia elementary School had 31 students sign up including 6 teachers and parents, so they had 37 people all together,” says Dianne Hermann.
25 area schools were allowed to participate in the event, in which Columbia had the highest number of runners and walkers. Freedom of Flight is a group of volunteers that bring students to the airport and the museum inside. They incorporate STEM activities in teaching students about aviation.
